Our mission and history
Our mission is to afford people whose lives have been disrupted by mental illness the opportunity to recover meaningful and productive lives through self-directed reintegration into the workplace and the community. The goal is a high quality of life for all members, ongoing improvement, and the ultimate elimination of stigma associated with mental illness.
Our history: The Key Clubhouse of South Florida was founded in 2008 by a grassroots group of dedicated family members and a young mental health advocate who shared a vision: helping individuals living with serious mental illness successfully reintegrate into their communities.
After two years of fundraising, planning, and community outreach, The Key Clubhouse opened its doors in Downtown Miami in July 2010, welcoming its first 10 members. As the program grew, so did the demand for its services. In 2013, The Key Clubhouse relocated to the Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler Supportive Housing Complex, where it continued expanding opportunities for recovery, employment, education, and social connection for more than eight years.
In July 2021, through a partnership with Carrfour Supportive Housing, The Key Clubhouse moved into a new 5,000-square-foot facility on the ground floor of Northside Commons, an 80-unit supportive housing community designed primarily for low-income individuals living with serious mental illness.
Approximately half of the apartments at Northside Commons are occupied by Clubhouse members, creating a vibrant community that supports recovery, independence, and belonging. This larger location has enabled The Key Clubhouse to significantly expand its rehabilitation, socialization, educational, and employment services, reaching more individuals throughout Miami-Dade County.

Expanding Access: Key Clubhouse Kendall
On July 20, 2024, The Key Clubhouse reached another important milestone with the opening of Key Clubhouse Kendall. This new location was established to address the growing need for accessible mental health services in West Kendall and surrounding communities—areas that had previously been underserved.
The 1,600-square-foot facility extends the recovery-focused services offered at the Northside location while reducing transportation barriers for members who previously traveled long distances to participate in Clubhouse activities. By bringing services closer to home, Key Clubhouse Kendall promotes greater engagement, stronger community connections, and increased opportunities for individuals pursuing their recovery journey.
Today, The Key Clubhouse of South Florida empowers people living with mental illness through meaningful work, supportive relationships, employment opportunities, education, housing supports, and community integration. What began as a grassroots vision has grown into a thriving organization that transforms lives and strengthens communities across South Florida.
Our programs are funded through the support of Thriving Mind South Florida, the Florida Department of Children and Families, Miami-Dade County, private foundations, corporate partners, and the generosity of individual donors who believe in the power of recovery and community.
